His retrospective show, ‘Narcissist’ at the Masterworks Gallery is not, therefor, for prudes… Mr. Palacio’s work is nothing if not powerful and is unusual in Bermuda because almost all the works are figurative.”

‘Serene pleasantries’ and harsh realities

…For instance, a display of Manuel Palacio’s always challenging artwork earlier this year, while prompting a few outraged responses, actually encouraged a healthy dialogue about race and relations in an Island where those subjects are still too often politely talked around rather than talked about…

Mr Palacio said, “Black apartheid is about the similarities under a Black Government and its white counterpart; in fact I believe there are no changes with the treatment of “others” – people who look different.”

EVA HODGSON

Dear Sir,

Much of Mr Palacio’s art might be considered “edgy” or “controversial” in a community as “conservative” as ours, but I doubt if any of it would have drawn an audience of 75 people other than this exhibition on race. (The Royal Gazette, August 8, 2011). Despite the frequent criticism of those who are condemned for always talking about black and white it is one issue that will get a response.
