‘Grand Opening of B-side art Exhibit
Over 50 people attended the official Grand Opening of the B-Side Art Exhibition on Sunday [June 24]. Those who attended the opening were treated to the sounds of Chewstick and also indulged in refreshments provided by Fish & Tings and Goslings Ltd.

Sen. Furbert On Palacio “Black Apartheid” Exhibit
Senator Laverne Furbert has hit back at aspects of the recent artistic showing by Manuel Palacio, as well as statements he made about his latest exhibit entitled “Black Apartheid”.
Mr Palacio said, “Black apartheid is about the similarities under a Black Government and its white counterpart; in fact I believe there are no changes with the treatment of “others” – people who look different.”

Dear Sir,
Much of Mr Palacio’s art might be considered “edgy” or “controversial” in a community as “conservative” as ours, but I doubt if any of it would have drawn an audience of 75 people other than this exhibition on race. (The Royal Gazette, August 8, 2011). Despite the frequent criticism of those who are condemned for always talking about black and white it is one issue that will get a response.

Biennial rejects are still well worth a visit
Manuel Palacio never fails to catch the eye with his overtly sexual works, none of which transgress to the pornographic. Here it is a mixed media sculpture of the back half of a woman’s torso, aggressive in its hyper-reality and suitably titled “Cursed Blessing“. His in-your-face style never quite manages to shock, but always commands attention.

Palacio aims to get blacks into art galleries

Mr. Palacio said he consciously incorporated a black perspective into his show, entitled “ I’Is”, as a way of encouraging more black people to feel connected to art. “I wanted a black theme because I had talked to a friend who questioned why more black people don’t come to art shows,” he said.
“My belief is that they don’t because they don’t see themselves in the art – so my answer to that was to create art that I like as a black person,” he added.
